Something Spiritual In My Peripheral - R. Ward

Hello everyone,

I have recently returned from a three week road trip or, one-of-the-most-monumental-times-in-my-life road trip. I initially went out on this trip to explore, yes, but mainly to perform at open mic nights throughout the North of the UK, in an attempt to boost my confidence whilst on stage. For those of you that don't know, I lost both of my parents as a child, at the ages of 3 and 9. So aside from the singing, this trip was about visiting some of their favourite places and feel more connected to my roots after leaving university last summer, bewildered and confused.

I can safely say that my stage confidence has improved greatly, and after meeting up with a family member after 6 years, and hearing some truth about what happened to my father, so has my understanding about life. It's hard to put into words the emotional rollercoaster the past month or so has been, but after new revelations I finally feel more connected to family, like I actually have a past.

Anyway, with more clarity I found myself able to write about my parents with more certainty, so have put together a selection of lyrics/poems from my collection over the past few years from 2013 (when I started writing) -present. The lyrics explore the feelings of confusion that come with loss; anger, sadness, and more recently, understanding and acceptance.

I feel that by creating this collection, which I have called 'Something Spiritual in My Peripheral' I can see my own personal journey, and finally move on and look forward to the future with greater positivity. The contents of these lyrics are incredibly personal, and if you are triggered easily by topics especially in mental health and depression, please do not feel compelled to read on. However, let me be clear the point of this collection is to show the journey through many different emotions, to come out stronger than ever.

(If you are feeling down after experiencing loss, please reach out to someone to talk to, you are never alone. If you need to speak to someone urgently call Samaritans on 116 123, who are available to talk 24/7. I also strongly recommend also finding a creative outlet, such as writing or painting, to express how you feel. We're all in this together! :))
